Painting
Example statement for individual photos:
“My Mother, and Her Mother, and Her Mother, and Me” is a tribute to my family. Going home to take care of my grandma as she has gotten sicker, I have seen the amount of stress and pressure that this new responsibility has placed on my mother. I took the reference photo of my mom showing her mom pictures of family and memories that my grandmother would soon forget. I really liked the way the lighting framed them and the meaning behind the moment. I wanted to capture that in this painting as a gift for them both. This felt like a good continuation of work I’ve done in the past that had to do with age and memory. However, I wanted this piece to take on a more warmhearted and positive tone. I wanted to capture not the sadness of forgotten memory, but the love between family that perseveres despite it. I experimented with this, mainly in the colors chosen. I did not want to simply recreate the photo so I chose a more vibrant and colorful color palette. I saved most of the references for the two subjects as well so that they remained the main focal point, and experimented with which parts of the background and figures could be abstracted or blurred out.
